BIOPLASTICS (bio-based polymers whether biodegradable or not) are receiving more and more interest from the plastics production and processing community both for environmental and economical reasons (soaring oil price).
However, it is plain to see that BIOPLASTICS still need lots of R&D efforts to be devoted to their development in order to make them cost-competitive but also performance-competitive versus classical oil-based plastics.
At NATISS, major efforts are devoted (through our own R&D efforts or for the benefit of our corporate clients) to the development of new-generation bioplastics grades showing an increased performance profile.
Our activities in the field of BIOPLASTICS are typically :
- Synthesis / preparation of bioplastics through chemical (PLA and derived polymers) or biotechnological
processes (PHA) at the lab scale (in glassware) and the semi-pilot scale by reactive extrusion or batch
polymerization
- Formulation of all types of bioplastics (additives, blends, biocomposites)
- Processing of polymers (extrusion)
- ...
